Eliud Kipchoge is the greatest ever marathon runner and the first man to run the 42.195 kilometres in under two hours, clocking a jaw-dropping 1hr 59min and 40sec in Vienna.
Kipchoge will now rest easy, having tried and failed to break this record at an event in Monza, Italy in 2017 where he crossed the finish line after 2:00:25, 25 seconds short of the two-hour barrier.
Kipchoge had 41 pacesetters captained by a US citizen, Benard kiplagat.
The champion’s wife, Grace Sugut together with his three kids for the first time attended his race. Deputy President William Ruto and host of other leaders were also in attendance.
